BYU Football: The pros and cons of Mangum and Wilson
By Adam Gibby
Opportunity
Winner: Tie
It’s tough to give either player an edge in this one. Tanner Mangum has the opportunity to have a storybook ending to his BYU career. It started with two Hail Marys and an eight win season and has since been filled with disappointment and injuries. Wouldn’t it be a great story to have Mangum’s senior year end with a few great wins, a highlight play or two, and a bowl game win?
On the other hand, you have Zach Wilson, the freshman quarterback who comes to BYU and steals the starting job from the senior after a terrible 4-9 season. Wilson can then come in and take BYU to a winning season and then lead the Cougars for the next three seasons. He will also have the opportunity to break dozens of BYU records on the way.
Both are great opportunities, and for that reason it’s a tie.
The Final Tally
It’s a 3-3-1 tie.
If this exercise proves anything, it’s that this quarterback race really is too close to call at this point.
It also shows that there are so many things that go into making this decision. Talent, leadership, experience, potential, player support, coaching philosophy, looking to the future, needing to win now.
The list goes on and on. We don’t have all the information, the coaches do.
It’s a good thing they’ll be the ones deciding who takes the field on September 1st.
What do you think? Should BYU go with experience or the future? Which opportunity would you like to see play out more? Let us know in the comments!
