Week 3 of the NFL preseason is in the books, and a few former BYU Football stars had standout performances.

There’s less than a week to go until cuts come in the NFL.

Each teams’ current 90-man roster will be cut to 53, and at least a few former BYU Football players will probably find themselves out of a roster spot when the regular season begins.

A few players stepped up in this week’s preseason games, but overall it was a quiet week for former Cougars.

Taysom Hill

Hill needed to bounce back from a disastrous four-turnover performance last week, and he did it in style. He completed seven of his eight passes for 66 yards and a touchdown, and led the Saints in rushing with 35 yards and another score on the ground.

Fred Warner

Warner got his first professional start this week and proved he belongs there. He led the 49ers with five tackles, three of them solo and one for a loss.

Kyle Van Noy

The New England Patriot tied for the team lead with five tackles, two of them were solo, including a  max-effort rundown of Panther quarterback Cam Newton that likely saved a touchdown.

The Rest of the Cougars

Outside of Hill, Warner, and Van Noy, none of the other former Cougars had standout performances. Ziggy Ansah, Kai Nacua, and Dallin Leavitt had solid games, and Jordan Leslie and Michael Davis made contributions to the stat sheet:

  • Ziggy Ansah (Detroit Lions) – 1 Tackle, 1 Solo, 1 Tackle for Loss, 2 QB Hits
  • Kai Nacua (Baltimore Ravens) – 3 Tackles, 3 Solo
  • Dallin Leavitt (Oakland Raiders) – 3 Tackles, 3 Solo
  • Jordan Leslie (Denver Broncos) – 1 Reception, 14 YDS

  • Bronson Kaufusi (Baltimore Ravens) – No stats recorded
  • John Denney (Miami Dolphins) – No stats recorded
  • Algie Brown (Kansas City Chiefs) – No stats recorded
  • De’Ondre Wesley (Buffalo Bills) – No stats recorded

The list of injured players increased in the third week, as Jamaal Williams sat out as a precaution and Jonah Trinnaman was placed on the Injured Reserve. Colby Pearson and Micah Hannemann didn’t see the field, but it wasn’t due to injury:

  • Colby Pearson (Atlanta Falcons) – DNP Coach’s Decision
  • Micah Hannemann (Cleveland Browns) – DNP (Coach’s Decision)
  • Tomasai Laulile (Indianapolis Colts) – DNP (Coach’s Decision)
  • Jamaal Williams (Green Bay Packers) – DNP (Injury)
