BYU Football: Scouting the Schedule – New Mexico State
By Shaun Gordon
The Offense
Quarterback
Junior college transfer Matthew Romero (Jr.) beat out Nick Jeanty (Sr.) for the starting spot. He put up great numbers in two seasons at Palomar College, but how well he does against FBS talent remains to be seen.
Jeanty will have experience if called upon, having started five games and played in fourteen in his career. However, his performance in those appearances was average at best.
Running Back
Jason Huntley (Jr.) will have big shoes to fill this year, as he steps into the role of primary back for the Aggies. Last season he rushed for 420 yards and a touchdown as he backed up Larry Rose.
Behind Huntley there’s little experience. Christian Gibson (Sr.) saw a few touches last year, while Royce Caldwell (Sr.) has switched positions from wide receiver after missing all of 2017.
Wide Receiver/Tight End
New Mexico State will miss Jaleel Scott, who had more than double the next Aggie in receiving yards. That next player was Larry Rose, so the team is without their two most reliable catchers.
They do bring back six receivers who caught passes in 2017, though, led by the trio of OJ Clark (Jr.), Anthony Muse (Jr.), and Jonathan Boone (Sr.).
One receiver to keep an eye on is redshirt freshman Tevis Abraham. He’ll see plenty of action and could find himself in the starting lineup before the season ends.
Because of New Mexico State’s fast-paced spread offense, they practically never use a tight end. In situations where they do, it’ll be either Bryce Roberts (So.) or Xander Yaberough (So.).
Offensive Line
Six linemen with starting experience are back in 2018. The Aggies were sixth in the nation in passing offense, and with a veteran line that rank could rise this season.
The starting five will be Sage Doxtater (Jr.) and Eric Pulliam (Jr.) at the tackles, Isaac McClain (Sr.) and Brian Trujillo (Jr.) at the guards, and Jamin Smith (Sr.) at center.
