BYU gets a shot to take down the No. 1 team in the nation in two different sports this week, and both of them happen to be the same school – Stanford.

It’s not too often that you get to host the top team in the nation in a given sport.

It’s even less often that you get to host the top team in two different sports in back-to-back evenings.

And it’s almost unheard of that both of those top teams come from the same school.

Yet that’s exactly what BYU has going, as they’ll host No. 1 Stanford in women’s soccer tonight at South Field, then host No. 1 Stanford in women’s volleyball tomorrow night in the Smith Fieldhouse.

For the soccer team, this is a chance to make a statement that the Cougars are back after a disappointing 2017 campaign. There’s no better way to do that than to knock off the top team in the nation.

That won’t be an easy task, though, since Stanford is riding a 24-game unbeaten streak. The defending national champions have absolutely dominated teams during that stretch.

For the women’s volleyball team, beating the Cardinal would signify that the Cougars have arrived as one of the elite programs in the nation.

The Cougars are nearly there, earning a Top 10 preseason ranking this season. They’ll enter the game as the No. 9 team in the nation, so beating the No. 1 team wouldn’t be much of a stretch.

Both teams will hope to draw from a rowdy home crowd. For the soccer team, this is their home opener. They went 1-1-1 in their first three games, all on the road.

Volleyball sits at 2-0 after taking down Duke twice last weekend, although they also play West Virginia tonight in the first game of the BYU Nike Invitational.

If either team can knock off Stanford, it will be quite the week for BYU athletics.
