The top team in the nation couldn’t escape the Smith Fieldhouse with a win.
On Friday night, No. 9 BYU Women’s Volleyball took down No. 1 Stanford in five sets. It’s the volleyball team’s first victory over a No. 1 team since 2000.
The game went five sets, and the Cougars narrowly edged the Cardinal 25-22, 25-20, 21-25, 20-25, 15-11.
BYU controlled the game early, jumping out to a 2-0 set lead, but the tables turned in games three and four, as the Cardinal stormed back to even up the match, showing why they’re the No. 1 team in the nation.
The fifth set featured a lengthy video review that was finally overturned in BYU’s favor, and it allowed the Cougars to hold the Cardinal at arm’s length and cap off the upset.
Roni Jones-Perry led BYU in kills with 20, and she also added 10 digs and five blocks. Heather Gneiting led all players with 10 blocks, and Mary Lake led all players with 18 digs.
As a team, The Cougars outhit the Cardinal .234-.203. The rest of the stats were basically even between the two teams.
Last season, the Cardinal finished 30-4, falling in the Final Four to Florida in five sets. With the core of their team back, they were voted as the top team heading into 2018.
With the win, BYU improves to 4-0 on the season, while Stanford drops to 2-1.
The Cougars will play their final match of the BYU Nike Invitational on Saturday at 7:00pm. They’ll host Wichita State, who’s 4-0 right now but faces Stanford early on Saturday before taking on the Cougars.
