BYU Women’s Soccer won a wild game 3-2 at Utah on Friday night, taking the first points in this athletic year’s Deseret First Duel.

After one of the most exciting final 20 minutes of a soccer game you’ll see, BYU Women’s Soccer took down Utah 3-2 in the first matchup of the 2018-19 Deseret First Duel.

After a scoreless first half, both teams turned on the scoring down the stretch. BYU’s Elise Flake drew first blood in the 52nd minute with a header to put the Cougars up.

Mikayla Colohan gave BYU a two goal lead in the 71st minute with another header, and the Cougars looked like they would cruise to the win.

Utah had other ideas, though. Three minutes later the Utes got on the board, and in the 83rd minute they tied it up at 2-2.

Suddenly, a game that looked like a BYU runaway turned into a probable draw.

For two minutes.

Until Maddie Siddoway Gates broke the tie in the 85th minute, and the Cougars held on in the final five minutes to escape Salt Lake City with the win.

The win moves the Cougars to 3-2-1 on the season, and gives BYU the first three points in this athletic year’s Deseret First Duel. The Cougars also receive a thousand dollars toward their student athlete fund.

BYU goalie Sabrina Davis left in the first half with an injury, so it remains to be seen how serious and long-term that injury will be.
