BYU Basketball: Kyle Collinsworth to join Toronto Raptors’ training camp
By Shaun Gordon
Former BYU Basketball star Kyle Collinsworth is headed to Toronto after agreeing to a partially guaranteed training camp contract.
Kyle Collinsworth won’t just be switching time zones to stay in the NBA, he’ll be switching countries.
According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski the former BYU Basketball star has signed a partially guaranteed deal with the Toronto Raptors. With the deal he’ll be a part of Toronto’s training camp, but a regular-season roster spot isn’t guaranteed.
With a partially guaranteed contract, a player receives an agreed upon portion of the NBA minimum to attend training camp. Even if that player doesn’t make the regular season roster, he’ll still be paid that amount.
That benefits a player who’s trying to earn a roster spot, since they’ll get their shot and get paid for doing it. It also benefits a team, who can use that guaranteed money as a sweetener to convince a player to stick around in the G-League rather than heading overseas.
For Collinsworth, this battle is nothing new. He worked his way from Dallas’ summer league team to their G-League team to the Mavericks, spending the last part of last season in the NBA on a guaranteed contract.
With Dallas last season, Collinsworth averaged 15 minutes per night in 32 games, with 3.2 points, 2.3 rebounds, and 1.8 assists per game.
But then Dallas signed DeAndre Jordan in the offseason, creating a roster crunch, and Collinsworth was the victim. He was released on the first day of the 2018 NBA Summer League, where he was playing for the Mavericks.
The former Cougar will have a decent shot to make the Toronto Roster, though. As of now, the Raptors only have 13 guaranteed contracts, leaving two spots open for Collinsworth will try to earn.
