For BYU Women’s Volleyball, it’s always nice to beat your rival. It’s even nicer to sweep your rival in front of a record crown when you’re the No. 1 team in the nation.

BYU Women’s Volleyball, the No. 1 team in the nation, swept rival No. 24 Utah in front of a record crowd on Thursday night.

And they did it in dominating fashion, winning 25-20, 25-14, 25-17.

The Cougars got off to a slow start in the first set, trailing Utah by as much as three midway through the set at 14-11, before BYU went on a 7-1 run to take a three-point lead of their own. The Utes never could pull even from there, as the Cougars won the set by five.

There was no slow start for BYU in the next set. They jumped out to a 6-1 lead and steadily built the lead from there, running away with the set 25-14.

The third set was much closer early on, tying the score at nine apiece before the Cougars went on another 6-1 run to break the game open. From there it was smooth sailing as BYU completed the sweep with the eleven-point set win.

The win over Utah is BYU’s fourth win against a Top 25 team in less than two weeks. The win improves the Cougars’ record to 9-0 with one more game to go before conference play begins.

A record crowd got to see the sweep. The 5,472 fans were the most at a BYU Women’s Volleyball match in the school’s history.

And they did it with their offense. BYU hit a ridiculous .427 in the match, led by Veronica Jones-Perry’s 13 kills. Kennedy Eschenberg led all players with four blocks, and Mary Lake led the match with 12 digs.

The win also puts BYU ahead of Utah by six points in the Deseret First Duel. The Cougars have won both women’s soccer and women’s volleyball to start the 2018-19 athletic season.
