2006 – BYU 31, No. 17 TCU 17

In 2006, BYU was finally pulling all the way out of their three years of misery. They split the first two games of the season, narrowly losing to Arizona and No. 25 Boston College , while blowing out Tulsa and Utah State.

They faced a huge test in their first conference matchup, heading to Texas to face No. 17 TCU. The Horned Frogs were riding a 13-game winning streak and were heavily favored to win the Mountain West Conference.

BYU had other ideas. The Cougars scored the first 10 points of the game and never looked back, holding TCU and arm’s length for the 31-17 win. BYU quarterback John Beck threw for 321 yards and three touchdowns to lead the way.

Once again, this game was big for three reasons.

First, it avenged the previous year’s controversial 51-50 double-overtime loss to TCU.

Second, it was Bronco Mendenhall’s first win over a ranked opponent.

Third, it put BYU in position to win the MWC Championship with a perfect 8-0 conference record.

2009 – No. 20 BYU 14, No. 3 Oklahoma 13

Nobody gave this game much thought in the first week of the 2009 season. The Sooners were overwhelming favorites to beat the Cougars, and with reigning Heisman Trophy winner Sam Bradford back at quarterback they were considered a strong national championship contender.

The game at Jerry World didn’t go quite as planned for Oklahoma. The Sooners scored the first touchdown and clung to a 10-7 lead at the half, but lost Bradford to injury.

Max Hall’s touchdown pass to McKay Jacobson with just over three minutes left gave BYU the 14-13 lead and the win.

It was BYU’s highest-ranked win since knocking off No. 1 Miami in 1990 vaulting the Cougars into the Top 10. They finished the season 11-2 at ranked No. 12 in the AP poll.

Unfortunately, Oklahoma struggled without Bradford to an 8-5 record and fell out of the polls, tarnishing what would have been an even more momentous win for the Cougars.
