BYU Football: Top 10 Cougar wins of all time
By Shaun Gordon
No. 1
1990 – No. 1 Miami 21, No. 16 BYU 28
Is there really any question which game belongs at the top of the list?
Surprisingly, it’s the only one on this list that took place at home.
While BYU was a dominant team throughout the 1980’s, Miami was the dominant team of the 1980’s. And in 1990 the Hurricanes still sat at No. 1 in the nation when they came to Provo.
BYU entered the game at No. 16 in the nation, led by Heisman candidate Ty Detmer.
And Detmer was brilliant in front of the home crowd. He threw for 406 yards and three touchdowns. His only real blemish was an interception.
It was a back and forth game, with neither team ever getting ahead by more than a touchdown. Miami led 21-20 in the third quarter before Detmer hit Mike Salido from seven yards out, and then found Andy Boyce for the two-point conversion to go up 28-21.
The Cougars held that lead through the entire fourth quarter, holding on at home to topple the No. 1 team in the nation.
Unlike other highly-raned teams BYU beat like Pitt and Oklahoma, Miami remained one of the top teams in college football that season. They finished the season with a 10-2 record, ranked No. 3.
BYU finished No. 22 in the country with a 10-3 record, and Ty Detmer walked away with a Heisman Trophy.
