Even with BYU Football’s blowout loss to Washington on Saturday, they’re still receiving votes in both the AP and Coaches Polls.

It shouldn’t be any surprise that BYU Football fell out of the AP Top 25 after yesterday’s 35-7 blowout loss to then-No.11 Washington.

Had the Cougars played the Huskies close, there’s a chance they might have remained ranked, but that wasn’t anywhere near the case.

Surprisingly, BYU still received votes in the new AP Poll, though.

They got three of them.

If you continue the rankings out by votes, that would put the Cougars at No. 39 in the nation.

Compared  to how most people thought this season would go, it’s a much, much better position than expected.

In the updated Coaches Poll  BYU never cracked the Top 25 yet this year, receiving enough votes (141) to come close at No. 26 last week.

In the updated poll they got four votes from the coaches. That’s good for No. 46 in the country.

Basically, based on the polls the Cougars’ loss dropped them roughly 20 spots nationally, from No. 20 to No. 39 (AP) and from No. 26 to No. 46 (Coaches).

How about BYU opponents?

  • Cal – No. 34 (AP), No. 44 (Coaches)
  • Wisconsin – No. 16 (AP), No. 12 (Coaches)
  • Washington – No. 10 (AP and Coaches)
  • Hawaii – No. 43 (AP)
  • Boise State – No. 26 (AP), No. 24 (Coaches)

BYU’s best chance to climb their way back into the Top 25 would be to win their next four games. Their next three are against teams that haven’t sniffed votes in either poll all year, even though Utah State is a solid team (maybe the best team in Utah). Those three wins wouldn’t move the needle enough nationally for the Cougars to climb back into the Top 25.

If BYU travels north to Boise and knocks off the Broncos, however, that’s a win that would likely propel them back into the rankings, assuming Boise State wins their next four games before taking on the Cougars.

But that’s a lot of ifs.

BYU needs to take this season one game at a time, especially with the Aggies coming to town on Friday.
