3 – Establish the Run Game

In both of BYU’s losses this season they’ve rushed for less than 100 yards. They’ve fallen even shorter of their 132 yards per game average.

As much as Cougar fans want to see the passing offense improve (for good reason), it’s the run game that has determined BYU’s success so far this season.

Against Washington, the Cougar run game was completely shut down, which is sad considering that the passing game was finally working decently well.

The Aggies aren’t particularly great at stopping the run, nor are they bad at it. Just like the rest of the defense, Utah State is average.

But with an elite offense, all the Aggies have to do is be average on defense. If BYU can’t put more points on the board than they have so far this season they’re going to lose.

And if they can’t run the ball well they won’t be putting points on the board.

Let’s put the magic number at 125. We’re calling our shot here.

If the Cougars rush for 125 yards or more they’ll win the game. If not, the Wagon Wheel will still reside in Ogden…or Logan…or wherever Utah State is at.
