BYU Women’s Volleyball can tie one school record with a win on Saturday night, and they’re inching closer to many more as the regular season nears an end.
BYU Women’s Volleyball is in the middle of a potentially historic season, although they haven’t made any history yet.
But that can change for the first time on Saturday night. If the Cougars beat Pepperdine they’ll move to 20-0 on the season.
Those 20 wins will match the longest winning streak for BYU in rally scoring history.
Back in 2005 BYU also won their first 20 games of the season, finishing the regular season 22-2. Unfortunately they fell in the first round of the NCAA tournament to none other than Pepperdine.
Let’s hope that part of history doesn’t repeat itself 23 years later.
It’s important to note that it’ll tie for the longest streak in the rally scoring era, not the longest BYU win streak ever. Before rally scoring was adopted, college volleyball teams would play a lot more games each season, accruing more stats and more wins (or losses) as a result.
For example, BYU’s win on Saturday night would tie that 2005 streak for the seventh longest Cougar win streak of all time. The six above it are:
- 1992 – 28 straight wins
- 1996 – 25 straight wins
- 1993 – 25 straight wins
- 1986 – 25 straight wins
- 1982 – 24 straight wins
- 1977 – 23 straight wins
If the Cougars’ win streak continues, they could finish the season with the all-time record. An undefeated regular season would put BYU at 30-0.
BYU also has a good chance to break another all-time record this year. The fewest losses that the Cougars have ever suffered is two, and they’ve done that three times (1970-72).
They’ve also got a good shot at breaking the school record for 3-0 sweeps (21) set in 2016. They’ve got 16 so far in 2018.
Taking a look at these records highlights two things for BYU Women’s Volleyball. First, they have a long and strong tradition of elite play. Second, this could turn out to be the best season in Cougar history.
But as the team would say, they’ve got to keep taking things one game at a time.
