BYU Women’s Soccer dominated in their biggest match, beating No. 6 Santa Clara to clinch the WCC title and the conference’s at-large NCAA Tournament berth.

BYU Women’s Soccer took advantage of a home crowd to take down No. 6 Santa Clara 2-0 on Saturday evening.

In the Cougars’ biggest match of the season they played one of their best of the year, beating the Broncos in most statistical categories, including the one that mattered most – goals.

BYU sophomore Mikayla Colohan scored the first goal less than 14 minutes in on a line drive kick, and junior Rachel Lyman added an insurance score just after halftime with a long cross that found the top left corner of the net.

But the play of the game came courtesy of Cougar goalie Sabrina Davis. The junior blocked a Santa Clara penalty kick shortly after BYU’s second score, preserving the two-goal advantage.

Davis finished with four saves altogether as the Cougars outshot the Broncos 14-11, including a 9-4 advantage in shots on goal.

It was a match that BYU dominated from start to finish, and doing it against the No. 6 team in the nation is even more impressive.

The win secures at least a share of the West Coast Conference Championship, as the Cougars sit now at 12-4-1, including a 7-1 record in league play.

More importantly, BYU has clinched the conference’s automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament. Since Santa Clara is the only team that can still claim a share of the title, this head-to-head win would be the tiebreaker for that automatic berth.

The return to the top of the WCC is the culmination of a rebound year for the Cougars, after a disappointing 2017 campaign that saw BYU finish 7-8-4.
