BYU Women’s Volleyball now has a commanding lead in the West Coast Conference after taking down San Diego in four sets on Friday night.

It took four sets rather than three for BYU Women’s Volleyball, but the Cougars stayed unbeaten on the season and opened up a massive conference lead.

BYU took down San Diego on Friday night in the Smith Fieldhouse, opening up a three-game lead in the West Coast Conference standings with only five games left to play.

The Cougars improve to 23-0 on the season and 13-0 in conference play. They’d have to lose at least three of their final five to miss out on the conference title.

San Diego dropped to 10-3 in conference, and they’re tied with Pepperdine for second in the WCC. BYU has already beaten both teams twice, and the Cougar’s final five opponents have a combined conference record of 21-42.

Veronica Jones-Perry and McKenna Miller both finished with a game-high 18 kills and Heather Gneiting led the match with 12 blocks. As a team the Cougars outhit the Toreros .279 to .112.

The first set was close until the Cougars pulled away late for the 25-17 win, and BYU controlled the second set, winning 25-15.

The third set was all San Diego. BYU kept within striking distance but never could overtake the Toreros, who won it 25-22.

San Diego controlled much of the fourth set as well, building a six-point lead before the Cougars stormed back late behind a blocking spree, finishing on a 12-3 run to close out the match 25-20.

BYU plays two matches next week, the final two regular-season home games for the Cougars. They’ll host Santa Clara on Thursday (7:00pm MT, BYUtv) and San Fransisco on Saturday (1:00pm MT).
