NCAA Committee has BYU Women’s Volleyball on top
By Shaun Gordon
The NCAA Division I Women’s Committee released their Top 10 on Sunday, and BYU Women’s Volleyball holds the No. 1 spot.
If BYU Women’s Volleyball wins their final five games of the regular season the odds are high that they’ll get the top overall seed in the NCAA Tournament.
That may seem obvious considering the Cougars are the No. 1 team in the national polls, but BYU’s seed has historically been lower than their rankings.
But the rankings released by the NCAA Division I Women’s Committee on Sunday affirm the Cougars’ top spot, as BYU sits on top in their first in-season Top 10.
Considering that this is a ranking released by the same people who will be deciding the tournament seeding, this is the strongest indicator yet that BYU has positioned themselves perfectly for that top seed and four home games in the NCAA Tournament.
It shouldn’t come as a huge surprise, though, that the Cougars sit at No.1 in the committee’s minds. While BYU’s RPI is No. 3, they’ve won 14 games against teams in the RPI’s Top 55:
- No. 1 Stanford
- No. 7 USC
- No. 20 Marquette
- No. 33 St. Mary’s
- No. 34 Duke (Twice)
- No. 38 Utah
- No. 44 Wichita State
- No. 46 San Diego (Twice)
- No. 53 Pepperdine (Twice)
- No. 55 Portland (Twice)
This is the third year that the committee has released these rankings before the season ends, similar to what the college basketball committee has begun doing.
Stanford took the second spot in the rankings, followed by Minnesota, Illinois, and Wisconsin. The Top 10 rounds out with Texas, USC, Penn State, Nebraska, and Creighton.
BYU plays their final two home games of the regular season this week, hosting Santa Clara on Thursday and San Francisco on Saturday.
