Big 12 Tie-Ins

Just like the previous conferences, the Big 12 is also in danger of being unable to fill their allotted bowl slots.

Including their one guaranteed NY6 slot, the conference has seven bowl affiliations. Right now six teams are guaranteed eligibility, and two more could reach that sixth win this weekend. Kansas State would have to knock off No. 25 Iowa State and TCU would have to beat Oklahoma State.

But there’s a strong chance that two Big 12 teams will make NY6 bowls, and if that happens both TCU and Kansas State would have to win for the conference to fill all of their slots.

If they can’t fill them all, here are the two most likely to have an at-large opening:

Cheez-It Bowl – Phoenix, AZ

December 26, 7:00pm MT, $1.04 Million Payout

BYU played in this bowl more than 20 years ago, but back then it was called the Copper Bowl. This game would be the closest for Utah-based Cougar fans, which would appeal to the bowl organizers.

It would also give BYU another game against a PAC-12 team.

Armed Forces Bowl – Fort Worth, TX

December 22, 1:30pm MT, $900,000 Payout

Another bowl that BYU has been to, but this one much more recently. The Big 12 is slated to face an AAC team this year, unlike when the Cougars beat C-USA foe Tulsa 24-21 in 2011.

However, if this bowl does have an open slot, it’s almost a guarantee that the organizers will do all that they can to fill it with Army for obvious reasons.
