BYU Football will take on Utah in their opening game of 2019, but next season the game will have a bit of a twist in when it’s played.

BYU Football has known for a few years that their opening game in 2019 will be against Utah.

But it wasn’t until Tuesday that fans found out that the Holy War will take place on opening day, not just opening week.

On Tuesday the PAC-12 released their schools’ 2019 football schedules, and it held one key tidbit for the Cougars. They’ll be playing the Utes on Thursday, August 29th rather than Saturday the 31st.

That Thursday is considered by most to be the opening night of college football.

Sure, a few teams will play the Saturday before if they receive scheduling exemptions, but the first time fans get to see some big matchups will come on the 29th.

There are no details yet as far as time and TV, and those won’t come out for months. It’s a near lock, though, that the Holy War will be one of the biggest games of the day. If you’re a betting man, place your money on a late (8:30ish MT) kickoff on ESPN.

With the date confirmed, Cougar fans know exactly when BYU’s next chance is to break their Holy War drought. The Utes’ win streak now sits at eight after a heartbreaking loss less than two weeks ago.

At least this time BYU plays host to Utah, bringing the Utes into hostile territory rather than vice versa.

Plus, this is the Holy War, and it’s a near certainty that the game will go down to the wire.

Now the Cougars just need to avoid snatching defeat from the jaws of victory…
