BYU Athletics: Here’s our Cougar Christmas wish list

BYU Sports: A National Championship
This one might be the most ambitious request for Santa on this list, but it’s far from impossible.
Unfortunately, BYU is muddling through a long national championship drought. In fact, this is the longest drought since the Cougars won their first title (Men’s Track and Field in 1970).
The last BYU team to win a national title was Men’s Volleyball in 2004. Here’s a list of every NCAA National Championship the Cougars have won:
- 1970 – BYU Men’s Track and Field
- 1981 – BYU Men’s Golf
- 1984 – BYU Football
- 1997 – BYU Women’s Cross Country
- 1999 – BYU Men’s Volleyball
- 1999 – BYU Women’s Cross Country
- 2001 – BYU Men’s Volleyball
- 2001 – BYU Women’s Cross Country
- 2002 – BYU Women’s Cross Country
- 2004 – BYU Men’s Volleyball
And there are plenty of teams who could pull it off in 2019:

- How to watch BYU Cougars football in 2022
– There’s Men’s Cross Country, the second best team in the nation for two straight years.
– Women’s Volleyball made the Final Four and spent most of the season ranked No. 1.
– Women’s Cross Country took seventh nationally.
– Men’s Volleyball is constantly in the national title hunt, and 2019 shouldn’t be any different.
– Women’s Soccer has shown that they can make deep NCAA Tournament runs.
Heck, even Men’s and Women’s Golf are good enough that they could win it all if they picked the right time to play their best.
So while it’s probably too much to ask of Santa for BYU Football or BYU Men’s Basketball to walk away with an NCAA championship, it’s not too much to ask for at least one Cougar team to break the 15-year drought.
