No. 6 – Women’s Soccer Wins WCC by Upsetting No. 6 Santa Clara

October 27, 2018

After a disappointing 2017 season, expectations weren’t high for BYU Women’s Soccer. So the Cougars proceeded to exceed those expectations, including winning nine of their last ten matches.

None was bigger than their home match against No. 6 Santa Clara. A win against the Broncos would clinch at least a share of the WCC Championship and an automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament.

Goals by Mikayla Colohan and Rachel Lyman, along with excellent defense and goalkeeping by Sabrina Davis, gave the Cougars the 2-0 upset and capped off the comeback season with a perch at the top of the WCC.

No. 5 – Zach Wilson Perfect in Famous Idaho Potato Bowl

December 21, 2018

After finishing the regular season at 6-6, the 2018 season was already an improvement over a disastrous 2017 campaign. The Cougars accepted an invitation to play one more game on Boise State’s Smurf Turf in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl against Western Michigan.

And while BYU’s offense kept shooting themselves in the foot early on, trailing 10-7 at the half, freshman quarterback Zach Wilson kept completing all of the passes he attempted.

And the floodgates finally opened in the second half. The Cougars scored touchdowns on six straight drives to blow the game wide open.

By the time the dust settled, BYU had blown out the Broncos 49-18 and Wilson finished the game a perfect 18-18 through the air. His performance set numerous school, bowl, and NCAA records for completion percentage, consecutive passes completed, and pass efficiency.
