BYU Football: Stadium upgrades will be minimal but effective
By Shaun Gordon
LaVell Edwards Stadium won’t look as drastically different as some expected when BYU Football kicks off in 2019, but the renovations will make gameday better.
Earlier in the year, BYU announced that LaVell Edwards Stadium will undergo major renovations before the 2019 football season.
Those renovations are meant to accomplish three major things:
- Connect the upper concourse completely, allowing access around the entire stadium without having to go to ground level.
- Create better access to the upper concourse.
- Allow the addition of restrooms on the upper level.
Well, the renderings for the upgrades have been released, and the new additions will accomplish all three of those key points.
The results probably won’t look like many fans expected, though.
When the initial announcement was made, many fans expected to see the four open corners filled in. Even though the school emphasized that no new seats would be added, many fans hoped to see those corners closed to create a complete bowl.
That’s not going to happen, at least not with this renovation. Instead, here’s what the stadium will look like when BYU hosts Utah to kick off the 2019 season:
The design is minimal and won’t change the overall look of the stadium much. The upper concourse will have wide open connectors at each corner, and they’ll be large enough to avoid fans becoming bottle-necked.
A new set of stairs will lead directly up from the southwest entrance to the top concourse, creating another point of access between the two levels.
And while the renderings don’t show it, the renovation will also feature new restrooms on the upper concourse, located on the north and south sides.
No, this design isn’t going to make LaVell Edwards Stadium look drastically different.
But yes, it will make the gameday experience much better for fans, especially those with seats in the upper parts of the stadium.
