This week’s polls are all in, and three BYU teams are ranked in the Top 25. It’s a strong start to the winter sports schedule for BYU Athletics.

The winter sports teams for BYU Athletics are doing their best to one-up the fall sports, and if they do it would be quite the accomplishment.

At one point in the fall, four different Cougar teams sat in their respective Top 25 rankings: Women’s Volleyball, Men’s Cross Country, Women’s Cross Country, and Women’s Soccer.

With the newest polls out this week for the winter sports, three BYU teams find themselves in the Top 25, and one is knocking at the door.

At the Top

Men’s Volleyball held steady at No. 4 in the latest polls after a pair of weekend wins over Penn State and Saint Francis. They’re 4-0 on the season so far, and have this weekend off before a pair of matches with UC Santa Barbara on February 1st and 2nd.

The Men’s Track & Field team moved up one spot in the polls this week, coming in at No. 9 after picking up a win in their first scored meet of the year at the Air Force Team Challenge. They’ll split into three groups to compete in three different meets this weekend.

Gymnastics sits at No. 16 this week. The Cougars beat in-state rival Utah State last Friday, but scored nearly two points worse than their season-opening score against Utah. They’ll look to improve in a second-straight meet with the Aggies this Friday.

Look Who’s Knocking

Three other BYU teams find themselves in the rankings, although not in the Top 25.

Women’s Basketball received enough votes in this week’s AP Poll to place them at No. 26 in the nation after knocking off No. 13 Gonzaga last Thursday. They’ll just play one game this week, traveling to San Diego to take on the Toreros on Saturday afternoon.

The USTFCCCA ranks all 130 Division I Track & Field programs, and BYU Women’s Track & Field jumped eight spots to No. 42 this week. They placed second at the Air Force Team Challenge last weekend, and like the men’s team they’ll compete in three different meets this weekend.

Finally, the ITA ranks the Top 75 teams in college tennis, and BYU Men’s Tennis cracked the polls at No. 67 after a 3-0 start to the season.

With the fall sports schedule complete, BYU Athletics sits at No. 5 in the Learfield Directors’ Cup standings. It tied their best-ever fall finish, and if the winter sports remain strong the Cougars could keep themselves in the Top 10 heading into the spring sports schedule.
