In a quiet weekend for BYU Athletics, the Cougars still had a strong showing, winning five of their seven games, matches, and meets.
It was a pretty quiet weekend for BYU Athletics. Both basketball teams only played one game, while Men’s Volleyball, Women’s Tennis, and Swiming & Diving didn’t play any.
But while there wasn’t as much action for the Cougars this weekend, it was still a successful one.
Let’s take a team-by-team look at how BYU fared since Thursday:
Men’s Basketball
On Thursday the Cougars picked up their biggest win of the year so far, knocking off St. Mary’s 71-66 in the Marriott Center. BYU played their best defensive game of the season, holding the Gaels’ Top 20 offense to just 44% shooting and 25% from distance.
The team didn’t play on Saturday but got some help from Pepperdine and San Diego, who beat St. Mary’s and San Francisco respectively. That put the Cougars back into a tie for second place in the WCC heading into their showdown with No. 4 Gonzaga this Thursday.
Women’s Basketball
The women’s team also played just one game this week, but theirs came on Saturday. The Cougars traveled to San Diego and took down the Toreros 65-56 behind 17 points from Shaylee Gonzales and 13 apiece from Paisley Johnson and Jasmine Moody.
The victory keeps BYU unbeaten in WCC play and extended their win streak to 11 games.
Gymnastics
BYU got back on track in their second straight match with Utah State, beating the Aggies again on Friday. They scored much better this time around, notching a 196.45, just .125 short of their record-setting performance against Utah to start the season.
The Cougars will travel to California for a tri-team meet on Saturday with Cal and Arizona State.
Men’s Tennis
The men’s team followed up their first loss of the season on Monday with another loss on Friday, this time against Wake Forest 4-0, the No. 1 team in the nation, in the ITA Kickoff.
BYU bounced back in their second meet of the kickoff, though, beating No. 37 Old Dominion 4-2 on Saturday.

Both the men’s and women’s teams split up this weekend, competing in three different events:
- The Dr. Sander Invitational in New York City
- The UW Invite in Seattle
- The Weber State Indoor in Ogden.
Only the Dr. Sander Invitational placed the teams in order of finish, and the men’s team took first in their side of the meet, while the women’s team finished tenth.
The bigger news came at the UW Invite, though, as the Women’s Distance Medley Relay Team set a new school record. The team consisted of Erica Birk-Jarvis, Lauren Ellsworth-Barnes, Alena Ellsworth, and Whittni Orton, and their time of 10:56.51 was more than two-tenths of a second better than the previous record set in 2009.
