BYU Athletics: Recapping a rough weekend for Cougar sports
By Shaun Gordon
The winter sports took a hit over the weekend for BYU Athletics, as the six Cougar sports only managed to win a combined two matchups.
For the first two weeks with a full slate of winter sports, BYU Athletics looked strong in every sport.
Those teams should still be strong, but the Cougars sure had a rough weekend.
In all, BYU went 2-7 across all sports over the weekend, after posting a winning overall record the first two full weeks.
Here’s how each team fared:
Men’s Basketball
The Cougars suffered one of their worst home losses on Thursday night against No. 4 Gonzaga, falling to the Bulldogs 93-63 in a game that was never really competitive.
BYU’s offense didn’t fare much better in the first half of their matchup with Loyola Marymount on Saturday. The Cougars only scored 23 points before the break, but broke the game open in the second half behind 25 points from Gavin Baxter to win it 67-49.
Women’s Basketball
After cracking the Top 25 this week for the first time since 2012, the Cougars fell apart twice on the road. Their 11-game winning streak has been replaced by a two-game losing streak, after falling 61-58 at Loyola Marymount on Thursday and 79-65 at Pepperdine on Saturday.
Men’s Volleyball
The Cougars moved up one spot in the polls to No. 3 this week, but that won’t last long. BYU lost their first match of the season at UC Santa Barbara on Friday night in a sweep, then got swept again in deja vu fashion on Saturday night in the rematch.
Gymnastics
BYU Gymnastics is a much better team at home than they are on the road. The No. 14 Cougars traveled to California for a tri-meet with No. 18 Cal and No. 19 Arizona State, and BYU finished third with a score of 194.975.
On the bright side, Shannon Evans led all individual scorers with a career-high 39.475.
Men’s Tennis
The Cougars headed north to take on No. 50 Utah State on Thursday, and they took down their in-state rivals 4-3. BYU only won two of the five singles matches but took both doubles points to secure the win.
Women’s Tennis
The women’s team didn’t fare as well as the men, as they traveled slightly east to take on Denver on Saturday. The Cougars fell 5-2, losing five of the six singles matches but taking the doubles point.
