BYU Sports: The results of the ‘BYU Oscars’
By Adam Gibby
Newcomer of the Year
Heather Gneiting – Women’s Volleyball
On just about any other team Heather Gneiting would have been the star of the team but for BYU she was just one of four stars on the team. She was first in blocks(159) second in hitting PCT (.338), and third on the team in kills (225). She became a critical player late in the season when McKenna Miller went down with a knee injury and helped carry the team to the Final Four.
Zach Wilson – Football
After a slow offensive start to the season, and a terrible game against in state rival Utah State, Zach Wilson came in for senior Tanner Mangum and brought with him immediate offense. In his first and only series of the game, Wilson was 3-4 for 52 yards, a TD and had 25 yards rushing. Although the rest of the season didn’t have the same efficiency, Wilson showed what he could be having a breakout game against Utah, and finished the year going 18-18 for 317 yards and 4TD.
Connor Harding – Men’s Basketball
Although Gavin Baxter has outplayed Harding in recent games, as a season goes, Harding has had a bigger impact. Harding on the season averages 6.1 PPG, 2.9 RPG and 0.8 turnovers per game. His best game came across UVU when he scored 14 points on 5-6 shooting including 2-3 behind the arc.
Shaylee Gonzales – Women’s Basketball
As mentioned earlier, BYU Women’s Basketball was expected to have a rebuilding year this season, but instead has beating Gonzaga twice and is projected to make the NCAA Tournament. Much of this is credit can be given to Shaylee Gonzales. On the season Gonzales is leading the team in scoring (16.4 PPG), 3PT PCT (.356) and assists (114). She is also in the top three in just about every other major statistic. Gonzales was crucial in both victories over Gonzaga averaging 18 points, 2.5 steals and 4 assists.
