It’s technically not being called a scrimmage, but there are still a lot of things to look out for during the BYU Football open practice on Saturday.
BYU Football is playing on Saturday! Well sort of… This Saturday will be the public’s only chance to see the Cougars play until they take the field against the Utes.
Although it is just a practice and is not being called a scrimmage there are quite a few things that fans should be looking out for.
The secondary competition
Every season there seems to be at least a couple of players who are getting the first team reps over players who have more experience and time in the program. There are big questions in the secondary as who will be playing aside Dayan Ghanwoloku. Between Troy Warner, Chris Wilcox, D’Angelo Mandell, Austin Lee, Malik Moore, and Chaz Ah You (LB?) there are a bunch of players who have game experience that will be in a tight fight to claim the three other secondary positions.
Although there may not be as much full contact as we have seen in the past, the secondary players are going to have to be crisp on their pass coverages and the lanes they take to “tackle” the running backs.
With this group perhaps being the most competitive as far as trying to get a starting spot, don’t be surprised if there are a few plays that are a bit rougher than they should be during spring practice.
