Jahshire Hardnett and Rylan Bergersen have both announced that they will not be playing for BYU next season, and BYU Basketball fans can just hope nobody else leaves.
On Thursday, sophomore guard Rylan Bergersen announced that he will enter the transfer from the BYU Basketball program. Although there were no public rumors of him leaving it should not be a big surprise. Bergersen saw his playing time go down as the season progressed going from about 12 minutes per game in the first half of the season, to averaging two minutes per game in the last eight games of the year.
During his career Bergersen averaged 1.9 points, 0.7 rebounds but shot a good 43.5% from the field. Bergersen likely would not have seen his numbers increase much with none of the shooting guards graduating this or likely leaving this season.
What it does do however is take away experience from the team. Even though Bergersen didn’t have a lot of playing time, he had been with the program for two seasons and that is something that would help some of the younger players going forward.
Going forward, BYU Basketball fans can just hope that Bergersen is the last player to transfer. Unfortunately however, recent history says that there will likely still be two or three more players to leave the team. Since 2015–2016 the Cougars have had five players leave the program every season.
The most likely players to leave are Yoeli Childs who is likely going to leave for professional ball and Dalton Nixon who saw his minutes and production go down during the season. Honestly though, it really could be anyone other than Jesse Wade who is coming off transferring from Gonzaga.
Again, we hope there is no more transfers, but we need to brace ourselves for more bad news to come.
