BYU isn’t really known as being a baseball school, but this year may be a year that starts to change for BYU Baseball.

Last season, BYU Baseball finished with a 22-28 overall record. It was the worst season since 2014 when the the Cougars went 22-31 and one of the worst seasons in program history. BYU Baseball hasn’t ever really been known for putting great teams together with the best ever finish for them being in all the way back in 1983 when they went 54-11 on the season.

This season, the Cougars are setting themselves up for a real chance to top that. At exactly the halfway point of the regular season they sit at 21-5 overall with most of the remaining season being against teams that are not as good as the first half of the season. The best team remaining on the Cougars schedule is San Diego which is at 18-8 overall on the season.

The team has been led with exceptional pitching holding opponents under three runs in 17 games this season. Sophomore Pitcher Easton Walker is leading the nation giving up 0.00 ERA on 31.2 innings pitched.

If there is an area that the Cougars can improve on it is on the offensive end. On the season, the Bat Cats have scored more than seven runs only nine times which isn’t bad per say, but even last year they had eight games with more than seven runs 26 games into the season.

The reality is, this team has a real chance to make it far in the postseason this year and hopefully even the College World Series this year in Omaha. The Cougars have only played in the College World Series one time in 1971, and given the lack of dominant teams in the region, BYU could potentially host a few games and then go far in the Super Regional if they are able to get more runs on the board.

The season is only half way over and without football or basketball going on, it is a great time to go out to Larry H. Miller Field to watch BYU Baseball do something they have never done before in arguably the greatest scenic part in the nation.
