With the end of the 2018-2019 BYU Sports year, it is time to look back and rank how they all did.

BYU Sports had overall a really good year in 2018-2019 with individual champions, multiple ranked teams and upsets seen on national television. Overall, there weren’t too many letdowns or disappointments.

In total, 14 teams saw at least some time ranked in the Top 25 and a few others also saw themselves close to that point. With the end of the year here, we want to bring a complete ranking of all the NCAA sanctioned sports at BYU. Not mentioned are the club sports that did really well including:

  •  National Championship by the Women’s Rugby team
  • National Championships by both the Jazz and Hip Hop dance teams
  • 2nd Place in Women’s Rugby
  • 8th place finish by the Men’s Rugby
  • Elite Eight finish for BYU Men’s Soccer

Rankings 15-19 The usual struggles… and VOLLEYBALL!?

No. 19 Women’s Tennis

Not too much here, the team finished 11-11 including a 4-5 record in conference.

No. 18 Men’s Swim and Dive

The men’s swim team did actually alright starting the season and being ranked as high as 14 in some polls. However, they didn’t finish well only having one swimmer represented at the NCAA Championships.

No. 17 Women’s Swim and Dive

The women didn’t start off to well and didn’t end too well, however there wasn’t the dropoff that the men’s team had. Gwen Gustafson was a bright spot breaking the BYU record in the 50m free and 2nd in the 100m free as a freshman. Swim and Dive could jump up a few spots next year.

No. 16 Women’s Golf

There was a bit of promise with 2018 Individual NCAA Championship participant Rose Huang coming back, but the season ended in sort of a disappointment seeing the Cougars only place in the top three of a tournament once. That one time was a second place finish in the WCC Championships.

No. 15 Men’s Volleyball

What happened?! We knew the team was really young, but the team that goes to Final Fours and has less losses than fingers on a hand year in and year out really struggled in 2019. Overall the team finished 13-12. At one point the team seemed to be turning it around after a 4-4 start where they got as good as 12-6, ranked in the top eight and appeared to be back in form. Then for some reason the wheels fell off and the team lost six of their last seven games. The team still finished ranked in the Top 25, but it was not a pretty season for them.
