No. 1 Men’s Cross Country

Record: NA

Highest Ranking: 2

Postseason: Finished as the National Runner ups

The debate between women’s volleyball and men’s cross country is close. In fact it is so close that the cross country team spent most of the time in the No. 2 spot while I was writing. The dominance of the volleyball team was unmatched by just about any team in any sport unless their name is Alabama in football. Despite this, there are two things that push the cross country team over the edge; national finish and late season dominance.

The team started off the season running in small meets and dominating. taking first place in all of them. Even though they were winning though, it wasn’t 54-2 on sets dominating.

But then the important races happened.

In the WCC Championships, not only did the men’s team win, they nearly swept the meet, going 1, 3,6 8 and 9. They even had the 10th place finisher but his time didn’t count for points. Essentially in a conference of ten teams, BYU had 6 out of the top 10 runners.

At the NCAA Championships the team came in favored to finish 2nd or 3rd but with a good distance between them and first place Northern Arizona. The team made it interesting though scoring only 33 less points then NAU, a gap that is closer than it seems. Overall the Cougars had four All-Americans and finished with the highest ranking of any NCAA sanctioned team for BYU
