Rankings 11-14 – Teams that let us down

No. 14 Softball

The softball team won the WCC which shows how strong this team was. However, the reason they are here is because of the expectations that they had coming into the season with players like All-American Libby Sugg. The roster appeared to be a top 25 program, but after a tough schedule and start to the season, it appeared almost as if the team lost confidence. The team did advance to the NCAA Regionals, however were eliminated in three games finishing much lower than the preseason expectations.

No. 13 Men’s Basketball

The men’s basketball team nearly ranked 15 where the softball team was since they didn’t even make it to the postseason, but since the expectations weren’t so high, it kept the ranking at 14. The team went 19-13 overall, failing to win 20 games for the first time ever under Coach Rose. There were moments that were great like Yoeli Childs’ dunk against Utah, and then there was the 23 point loss against San Diego in the WCC Tournament. It was overall a rough year, but watch for this team to move into the top five next season as Yoeli Childs will be back and the Cougars add Jake Toolson alongside new head coach Mark Pope.

No. 12 Men’s Golf

Men’s golf started off really good this season and had one of the greatest golfers in the nation with Peter Kuest. Kuest finished this season with multiple individual wins. The team ended up finishing 30th in the NCAA Tournament however had the disadvantage of not being able to compete on the final day because it was on Sunday. Instead they played their round on Thursday with no competition to help them out.

No. 11 Men’s Tennis

The tennis team had a pretty good year actually compared to the past nearly being ranked in the top 25 multiple times. There was one point during the season when the team won 11 straight matches and had a 14-2 overall record. Then the end of the season came including a four game losing streak that turned a great season into a season that looks like every other season for the tennis team… not very good.
