No. 5 Women’s Basketball

Record: 26-7

Highest Ranking: 25

Postseason: Advanced to the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament

As surprising as the baseball and women’s soccer teams were, the most surprising team was the women’s basketball team. Like the soccer and baseball teams, the basketball team was coming off of a historically bad season going 16-14.

The team entered the season with virtually no senior leadership and even had to pull Caitlin Alldredge from the softball team to bring in some maturity. From a standpoint of a fan in the preseason, the 2018-2019 season appeared very much to be a building year for the Cougars.

With a freshman, two sophomores a junior and Alldredge who hadn’t played competitive basketball in five years the team found themselves falling to SUU and Utah early in the season to meet the expectations that were set preseason for them. Then something clicked.

The Cougars went on an 11 game win streak and found themselves nationally ranked in the first time in five years. A three game skid cost the team the regular season WCC championship, but determination and hard defense propelled them through the WCC Tourney and on to a championship. The Cougars then went on and beat Auburn in the first round of the NCAA Tournament before falling to No. 1 seed Stanford in the Round of 32.

Of all the teams on campus, the women’s basketball team may have the most potential in 2019-2020.
