BYU Football will kick off their season against Utah in 49 days!

Yesterday I was contemplating whether BYU being in a conference is a good idea or not. On one side there is conference races, more chances to get to a BCS game and more rivalries. One of the biggest problems with the current situation that BYU is in is that regardless of whether they go 6-6 or if they go 10-2 they will play in the Hawaii bowl.

This makes the games against Idaho State, UMass and Liberty meaningless unless you want to watch some backups get some playing time or need a good blowout. But then I thought about the fans. BYU Football is unique because there are thousands of fans all over the country. What Independence has done is given those fans the opportunity to go to BYU all over the country. Yesterday, I created a map that showed how BYU Football would play within eight hours of just about everyone within the next three years.

If the Cougars were in a conference that would not be the case because eight games would be conference games, one would be a FCS at home, two against in state foes and then probably one P5/G5 game somewhere else. When I considered this, I realized that Independence is key in keeping the national audience engaged.

Today’s player was on the team when Cougars first went Independent and helped them tremendously in the first year of the transition.
