Special Teams

Last season the Ryan Rhekow and Jake Oldroyd kept their jerseys pretty clean. Rumor has it Rhekow never had to shower after the game. In all seriousness, these two were not needed often since the offense rarely faced a 4th down. When they were called on they delivered.

Rhekow averaged 45 yards per punt and only had one touchback all year. If he can hold up those numbers again, he will turn the field around and give the defense a much easier job by not having them essentially go onto the field near midfield.

Jake Oldroyd was perfect last season going 13 for 13 including a 54 yard make. He may not have to be perfect this season to be a success, but with the seven P5 games (plus Boise State), the Cougars may need him to hit a game winning field goal or two this season.

The play of these two special team specialists very likely will be the difference in whether the Cougars win or lose two or three games.
