BYU Football: Different scenarios for a 12 team playoff
By Adam Gibby
Six Automatic Qualifiers
This is the most likely scenario where it would essentially be the current NY6 system. Every Power Five Conference would have an automatic qualifier from their Conference Championship Game as well as the highest ranked G5 Conference Champion.
The rest of the teams would consist of “at-large” births based off of the College Football Playoff rankings. There would be no guaranteed spots for any particular conference amongst these teams.
What this means for BYU
This may be the worst case for BYU because it always seems like there is always two or three SEC teams, and two Big 10 and Big 12 teams hanging around the Top 10. While this isn’t always the case, if you take out the three conference championship teams from these three conferences, we are left with already five teams likely getting at large bids. That leaves one more spot for the Pac 12, ACC and the rest of the G5.
Unless BYU goes undefeated, it is hard to see a scenario where the Cougars make even a 12 team playoff. Even this season with the Cougars going 10-1 in the regular season they would not have made this playoff. They would have been five spots out.
