BYU Football: 2021 opponent Power Rankings
By Adam Gibby
Georgia Southern was one of only two teams (Alabama) to play 13 games in 2020. This game has a Coastal Carolina feel to it where if BYU gets caught looking ahead to USC, Georgia Southern will take advantage.
Georgia Southern runs a triple option, also similar to Coastal Carolina who ran a stretch option, and preparing for it could be tough for the Cougars. A win for the Cougars would be a good solid win against a better than average G5 team. However, it wouldn’t be headline news or anything to celebrate over.
If the Cougars lose, it would a bad loss for them, but not as bad as South Florida. It would be a big win for the Sun Belt Conference who continues to try to show they are the second best G5 league, something that would have been laughed at just three years ago.
If Utah State wasn’t an in state rival, the Aggies would be last on this list. Utah State is not going to be good this year and winning this game will do little for BYU Football since it isn’t like there are any recruits who are borderline between Utah State and BYU based off of on the field success.
Yes, this is a rivalry game, but it feels like the fourth biggest rivalry game behind Utah, Boise State and the reunion of Bronco Mendenhall in Provo with Virginia.
If somehow BYU lost this game it would look really bad and would have more of a negative effect than losing to any of the other G5 schools, especially if the Cougars also lost to Utah earlier in the season.
