The return of Bronco Mendenhall to Provo. The awaited game may come a few years too late to have a huge emotional rivalry feel. Considering Mendenhall’s last game with the Cougars was back in 2015, most of the BYU’s ROC section will have never attended a game when Bronco was the coach.
While the rivalry feel will be bland, the game at least on paper in the preseason seems like a great measuring stick for BYU. Virginia comes in with a label of about the most “average” P5 team that you can have. Virginia over the past four seasons has been 17-16 in ACC games and 21-20 overall record in P5 games. If that doesn’t say average, I don’t know what does.
This game will be a great measurement to where BYU Football is as a program. If BYU is an average P5 caliber team, I expect a close game, if they are not quite at that level, they may lose by a few scores, and if they are above average, BYU may surprise with a blowout.
