8 – Super Conferences Emerge

With NIL and the transfer portal now in full effect, it feels like Super Conferences may be the future of college football. With the SEC likely going up to 16 teams, what would the other conferences do? Naturally also expand to 16 teams.

  • The ACC would add two teams, likely adding UCF and Notre Dame or West Virginia
  • The Big 10 would add Cincinnati and Iowa State
  • SEC would be at 16 teams
  • Pac 12 would add BYU, Boise State, Oklahoma State and a Texas team

This model would leave a lot of teams in the dark, particularly in the Big 12 and AAC, but they would likely create a basketball conference that would mirror the current Big East. The remaining football teams between the AAC/Big 12 would combine forces and become a pretty good G5 conference.

Likelihood of happening: Medium

While this model makes sense, this would end up involving probably every conference in the country outside of the MAC and CUSA. The cooperation and work to get this done would likely lead to changes that would be relatively permanent, unless of course the Super Conferences went to 18-20 teams each.
