BYU Football plays seven P5 teams as well as Boise State this upcoming season.

Not every game is created equally. In fact, the order of games can determine how important a game is. For BYU Football this could not be more true. Normally the Cougars play most if not all of their Power Five games in the first few weeks of the season. But with seven Power Fives this year, there is a good balance of these games throughout the season.

But which of these games will make or break the Cougars season? For the sake of this article we will assume that BYU beats Arizona, South Florida, Utah State and Idaho State, teams the Cougars should not lose. Losing these games would likely break BYU’s season, but again the Cougars probably shouldn’t lose.

No. 3 Georgia Southern

Georgia Southern feels like it could be 2019’s version of Toledo or South Florida. With USC lurking the following week and three weeks without real competition (BYE week and Idaho State), the Cougars will travel across the country to play the triple option running Golden Eagles.

While it is possible that this game may not matter too much if the Cougars are in the 6-4 or 7-3 range, if the Cougars are 8-2 or better or 5-5 then this game becomes very crucial. With a win the Cougars would be 9-2 going into the USC game likely ranked. Obviously if the Cougars are 5-5 then this game would get them to a bowl game, something BYU absolutely needs as they try to position themselves up for the future.
