5 – Special Teams

Jake Oldroyd was phenomenal last year not missing a single field goal. Ryan Rehkow was also very solid in the punt game with eight punts over 50 yards, 16 punts inside the 20 yard line and only one touchback.

So if this position played nearly perfect last year, why aren’t they higher on the list?

2019.

While I don’t like to dwell on negatives in the past, fans will remember that in 2019 Oldroyd started off the season extremely well going 11 for 12 including the game tying field goal against Tennessee. However, Oldroyd then went 6 for 13 to finish out the season. It got to the point where Oldroyd was pulled out of some games because the coaches couldn’t trust him to make a 30 yard field goal.

Kicking is very mental and Oldroyd historically has shown he can lose confidence. Let’s hope that doesn’t happen in 2021. If it doesn’t, the special teams unit may be the most dependable group on the team.
