BYU Football officially announces the starting quarterback
By Adam Gibby
After months of anticipation and speculation, BYU Football finally announced the starting quarterback.
The wait is finally over! BYU Football finally announced that Jaren Hall will be the starting quarterback for the Cougars in 2021. The announcement comes after Hall battled it out with Jacob Conover and Baylor Romney since the start of Spring Football back in May.
While the announcement will not be a surprise to many, Cougar Nation can now take a collective big breath knowing that between now and the start of the season Hall will be getting most of the first team reps while knowing that this is now his team to lead.
Hall came into the QB competition as one of two players who had started games for the Cougars. As a starter, Hall went 1-1 in 2019 for 31/46 with 420 yards and 1 touchdown. He also added 139 yards on the ground averaging 4.8 yards per carry. Hall spent this past summer working out with John Beck who many point to as the mentor that really changed the trajectory of Zach Wilson to the path he is now on.
Baylor Romney will be the second string quarterback and Jacob Conover will redshirt this year, barring the need for a third quarterback according to offensive coordinator Aaron Roderick
The announcement of the starting quarterback only means that Hall will start off the season. In the 10 years of Independence, the Cougars have only gone wire to wire with a starting quarterback twice, once in 2014 with Taysom Hill and in 2020 with Zach Wilson.
The Cougars will open up the season next week against Arizona in Allegiant Stadium before hosting Utah at home on the 20th anniversary of 9/11.
