BYU Football: College football Top 25 – Week 5
By Adam Gibby
The College Football Top 25 should be really interesting this week as there were plenty of upsets and last second wins.
What a week. When looking at the Week Four schedule, there weren’t too many marquee games. It looked like there may be at worst three or four Top 25 teams that would end up losing.
For the entire 2021 season I will put out my Top 25 poll, whether BYU Football is in it or not. Again, my polls are based off of what I see, not what the AP/Coaches Poll says. In fact, I don’t even reference them while making my ranking.
Below are my Week Five rankings with the preseason rankings in parenthesis.
WEEK FIVE RANKINGS
1. Alabama (1)
2. Cincinnati (2)
3. Georgia (3)
4. Penn State (4)
Top four stay the same. While Penn State’s win wasn’t pretty, it was good enough to stay in the final Playoff spot if they started today.
5. Arkansas (15)
Arkansas looked really good once again this time dominating 20-10 against Texas A&M. This team is looking really strong in Sam Pittman’s second year as head coach. The Razorbacks will get a huge test next week when they travel to Athens to take on Georgia.
6. Oklahoma (5)
7. Oregon (7)
8. Iowa (8)
9. BYU (9)
Although BYU didn’t ever really feel threatened by South Florida, this game was way too close and fans are left wondering how good the defense can really be going forward. A big win here would have jumped the Cougars over Iowa after the Hawkeyes struggled themselves to pull away from Colorado State.
10. Florida (10)
11. Coastal Carolina (12)
12. Ohio State (13)
13. Ole Miss (16)
14. Notre Dame (18)
Notre Dame for the second week in a row looked very strong and I am finally convinced that this is a Top 15 team. While much of the Irish’s success could be attributed to Wisconsin just completely falling apart and throwing interceptions and not covering on special teams coverage.
15. Texas A&M (7)
16. UCLA (17)
17. San Diego State (19)
18. UTSA (22)
UTSA passed their final real test by taking down Memphis on Saturday. UTSA very well could now go on and finish the regular season undefeated. In fact, according to ESPN FPI, the Roadrunners are favored in every remaining game they have on their schedule.
19. TCU (20)
20. Michigan (24)
21. Michigan State (NR)
The two Michigan teams who struggled terribly are now a combined 8-0. While neither has really played a tough opponent yet, they are winning games that they would have lost last year.
22. Oklahoma State (NR)
23. Baylor (NR)
Is Baylor the surprise P5 of the year? Projected to finish 6th in the Big 12, the Bears are at this point looking like one of the most complete and dominate team in the conference. Their matchup with BYU in a few weeks could be a Top 15 matchup for both teams.
24. Maryland (NR)
25. Virginia Tech (NR)
On the Fringe: Arizona State, NC State, SMU, Texas, Liberty
Dropped Out: Clemson (12), Liberty (14), North Carolina (21), Memphis (25)
