BYU Football: 5 reasons why this season isn’t over

5. Show that BYU is the Dominant Program in the West

BYU has already beaten Utah and Arizona State. If we are talking teams west of Texas, the only candidates really that have a claim as the best in the west are Oregon and maybe San Diego State.

Assuming that San Diego State loses a game at some point and Oregon drops another game, BYU would have a real legitimate argument as being the best team in the west. If the Cougars win out, there is even a chance, albeit an outside chance, that BYU ends the season as the highest ranked team on the west side of the country. As it currently stands, only Oregon, San Diego State and Utah are ranked higher than the the Cougars, but nobody will put Utah over BYU since they are both with two losses and BYU won the head to head.
