BYU Football: BYU’s Path to the NY6 based off the CFP poll
By Adam Gibby
No. 16 Ole Miss
Ole Miss will jump BYU if they keep on winning. With games still against Texas A&M, and No. 17 Mississippi State, the Cougars can’t expect to remain ranked ahead of the Rebels if both teams just continue to win.
The best game that Ole Miss can lose would be to Liberty this weekend. Liberty is a sneaky good 7-1 team themselves that could catch the Rebels sleeping a bit. That is a big ask however, so the next best realistic good loss for Ole Miss would be to lose to Miss State in the season finale.
No. 17 Mississippi State
Mississippi State is one of the biggest surprises with three losses already. The perfect storm for the Bulldogs would be to lose to Arkansas on the road this weekend and then beat Auburn and Ole Miss later this season. I don’t think a four loss Miss State team gets ranked ahead of BYU.
No. 18 – 25
There is no team outside of the Top 17 that seems to have a shot at jumping BYU in the rankings, outside of perhaps the winner of Minnesota vs Wisconsin who if they run the board and win the Big 10 Championship against Ohio State or Michigan State would likely make that jump.
Every other team either doesn’t have enough big games left (Kentucky, Pitt, NC State, SDSU).
