BYU Football: Clear cheering guide for Championship weekend

WOULD BE NICE TO HAVE – In order of importance

Pac 12 Championship – Utah beats Oregon by a slim margin – Yes, I know the Pac 12 Champion gets a bid to the Rose Bowl. But yes it does still matter. The Pac 12 Championship will be played on a Friday. Because of that, if Utah wins, the committee will already have BYU penciled in ahead of the Ducks in the No. 11 spot. Suddenly, the margin of victory for Oklahoma State over Baylor doesn’t have to be as big as Baylor could only drop two spots to No. 11 and BYU would move up to No. 10. Asking the same thing if BYU is No. 12 in the rankings is a tougher ask. And to those saying Utah would jump BYU, no they won’t.

Mountain West Championship – Utah State beats San Diego State – USU could win the MWC which would be a nice feather in the cap for BYU as they would have wins over at least one conference champion. When and if we get to the point of splitting hairs between Baylor and BYU, that win could be a tiebreaker. Also, if Utah were to blow out Oregon in the Pac 12, the SDSU loss for Utah could play an opposite effect on the Utes.

ACC Championship – Hope for a close game – This game doesn’t seem to matter much as the winner is unlikely to pass BYU in the rankings (putting space between Baylor and BYU). The only issue possibly could be if Wake Forest were to win by some crazy margin like 70-7. In that case, it could definitely happen.

CUSA Championship – UTSA wins – In the very real path that BYU ends up playing UTSA in the Independence Bowl, BYU fans need UTSA to be the best opponent that they can possibly be. A win could possibly get them ranked in the Top 25 again.
