Every year BYU Football has a few surprise production players.

BYU Football is returning the bulk of their offensive production from last season. That would lead one to think that we should know who will be the offensive stars will be since we’ve already seen them play.

Yet there are always players that seem to come out of nowhere and make a big impact. Last season, that was Puka Nacua and Keanu Hill who were both given bigger roles as injuries began to stack up. You could even make the argument for Tyler Allgeier. Everyone knew that he was good, but nobody saw him rushing for much over 1,000 yards with a schedule featuring 7 P5 teams.

But who will be the breakout players this season? I will only be focusing on the offensive players who are going to be either carrying, throwing or catching the ball (no linemen).

1. Isaac Rex

Everyone remembers in 2020 when Isaac Rex came out of nowhere and ended up leading the Cougars in receiving touchdowns. The expectations were through the roof for his 2021 season that ended up being, alright but nothing overly special.

Prior to getting injured Rex was averaging only 1.5 catches per game and only totaled three touchdowns. For a player who averaged 3.2 catches and had 12 touchdowns in 2020, it was a bit of a letdown (although it should be mentioned that there were different OC’s and QB’s).

I believe that as long as Rex is healthy, he will get closer to his 2020 numbers of being targeted much more often and scoring around ten touchdowns. He just creates such a big matchup problem that I don’t see how he won’t be utilized more.
