Teams We Aren’t Sure About Yet

It should first be mentioned that there are some sports that will remain outside of the Big 12. Men’s volleyball, gymnastics, swim and dive, M/W rugby, lacrosse, and other extramural sports will likely remain in their conferences for the foreseeable future, although some like swimming may switch to the Big 12.

However, the following sports will be in the Big 12 and it’s tough to say whether they are in a spot to make a postseason run at this point.

Softball: BYU Softball was snubbed from the NCAA Tournament this year, however one reason was that they lacked non-conference wins. Despite an 18 game win streak to finish out the season, it was all against WCC opponents which may prove not be a challenge. After all, the Cougars had won a decade of conference championships yet had nothing to really show for it in the postseason.

Women’s Basketball: This year’s squad certainly would have been in the top half of the Big 12 and clearly in the NCAA Tournament, but that was this year. With Head Coach Jeff Judkins gone and with a ton of talent leaving the program over the next year, one has to wonder if the women’s basketball team will still be up for the challenge. The foundation has been set, so there is a good chance they are.

M/W Golf: These two programs are very hit and miss, and the postseason isn’t really determined by how well you do in conference, rather it is done by qualification in different tournaments that aren’t linked to a conference championship. This year, both teams advanced to the second round of the postseason which gives reason to believe that the Cougars could be a middle of the pack Big 12 team.
