BYU Sports officially only have one more season each before Big 12 play.
As Halley Folsom Walker crossed the finish line in the 800m to finish up her heptathlon at the NCAA Track and Field Championships, she officially ended the 2021-22 sports season for BYU sports.
This means that there is only one more complete season for every team before BYU sports enter the Big 12.
It was less than one year ago that Texas and Oklahoma announced that they would depart for the SEC and about 9 months ago it was officially announced that BYU would join the Big 12 alongside UCF, Cincinnati and Houston who announced yesterday that they will also join the league on July 1st, 2023.
While of course the feeling around joining the Big 12 has been nothing short of every synonym in the thesaurus of amazing, it has to this point also felt a bit distant. Until today, there were still a full season + ______ before BYU entered the league. Now, it is just one season.
From this point on, every ‘something’ will be the final something. After BYU opens up with USF in Tampa, FL in football, fans will be able to say that the next opening game will be as a member of the Big 12.
Every WCC Tournament will be the last and every conference game (for the most part) will be the last time for years that BYU will face a team. When women’s volleyball plays Santa Clara, they may never play again as it will be the end of that era.
Long story short, we are entering the last ever stage. And we just completed the first one; the last sporting event before the last season.
This is going to be fun.
