The BYU rushing attack came into the game averaging 238 yards per game, the 11th-best rushing offense in America. They led the way again in this victory. LJ Martin went over the 100-yard mark for the fifth time this season. Martin had 122 yards on 26 carries and has had at least 94 total yards in every game this season.
On 3rd and 10, with his all-conference running back lead blocking, Bear Bachmeier runs it in for six!!! #BYU #GoCougs! https://t.co/IEmHfVIWie

As usual, Martin’s quarterback was critical in the rushing attack too. Bear Bachmeier had 62 yards on 11 carries and maybe the biggest touchdown of the night. Bachmeier averages at least 50 yards and a touchdown on the ground every game this year. He was again solid through the air, going 13 of 22 for 166 yards and a beautiful touchdown to Chase Roberts. The team was under their average of 448.2 yards per game (29th in the nation), gaining only 368 total yards, but they made them count.
That is not the throw of a true freshman! #ChaseFromBear!! #BYU!! https://t.co/gODrKwu17z

Like they were on defense, the BYU offense was good in crunch time, when the most was on the line. BYU’s Red Zone offense had left a little to be desired coming into this game. They were 26 of 29, but had scored only 17 touchdowns and had been forced to settle for nine field goals. They were close to perfect against Utah, going 4 of 4, with three touchdowns and one field goal.
A good Red Zone offense rewards a defense by scoring. A great running game helps a defense by helping them stay fresh. A turnover-free offense keeps a defense out of short fields and bad spots. The Cougars did not turn the ball over. Keeping their defense out of bad situations helped the defense to excel at the times it mattered most. Maybe the biggest thing an offense can do for a defense is make points out of turnovers. BYU’s defense gave the offense the ball two extra times. The Cougar offense rewarded the defense by getting 10 points off of Ute turnovers.
While BYU likes to run you over with the best running back in the Big 12 in LJ Martin, and likes to bulldoze you with Bear ‘Tebow’ Bachmeier, they can attack however they need to. The 7-0 Cougars of BYU have what they need to add an even better passing game to their arsenal. When they do that, the rest of the Big 12 better look out.
