BYU’s load-bearing running back LJ Martin was hurt early in the Cougars’ game against Iowa State. Martin was the fifth in rushing yards in the nation, and his presence was missed. It put pressure on the true freshman Bear Bachmeier, and he answered the call. Bachmeier had a career-high 307 yards passing and led BYU back to a 41-27 come-from-behind victory.

Bear will get the lion’s share of the credit, and rightly so, but he couldn’t have done it without the best wide receiver tandem in the Big 12, and one of the best in all of college football. BYU came into the game averaging only 203.9 yards per game in the air. Bear got over 100 yards over that by passing it to Parker Kingston and Chase Roberts.

The speedster Kingston chalked up his third game going over 100 yards receiving in his last four outings. Kingston had the first game with multiple receiving touchdowns in his career. He caught seven passes for 133 yards and those two touchdowns. Parker Kingston has 34 catches for 516 yards and six total touchdowns.

Roberts, who has been BYU’s top wide receiver for years, quietly had a big game of his own. Chase Roberts had his second game with over 100 yards receiving, and the second time he and Kingston both went over the century mark. Roberts had eight catches for 128 yards. He has 32 catches for 591 yards and four receiving touchdowns.

Roberts and Kingston are doing what a pair of first-round NFL draft picks do at Ohio State. Carnell Tate and Jeremiah Smith get each other open. When you defend one, you leave the other in a match-up they are going to win. Chase Roberts and Parker Kingston do the very same thing. Big 12 or Big Ten, BYU or Ohio State, this is what the best do, and Roberts and Kingston are rightly among the best.

These BYU receivers will continue to help their true freshman quarterback, and they have plenty of depth to do it. Kick returner Cody Hagen has the moves to make plays catching the ball, and so does punt returner, and older brother of Bear, Tiger Bachmeier. BYU is also rumored to get Jojo Phillips, one of their top wideouts who was hurt early in the season, back from injury. If the injuries to the running backs force BYU to air it out more, they have the dogs to do it effectively.
